Oltre 950 persone hanno parteicpato alla 70esima edizione dell' interstate Picnic Pratolano in Hamilton, Canada

     Sono passati settanta anni da quando un gruppetto di pionieri pratolani residenti in Cleveland, Ohio, diedero inizio ad un evento che riunisse, una volta all'anno e possibilmente in citta' diverse tutti quei pratolani sparsi negli Stati Uniti.

     Infatti per molti anni, quello che oggi viene chiamato l' Interstate Picnic Pratolano si svolgeva nelle sole citta' statiunitese. Poi in seguito negli anni '50 e '60 del secolo scorso, con l'arrivo di una moltitudine di pratolaniin Canada, e in particolar modo nelle citta' della provincia dell' Ontario come: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brantford e London, anche loro vollero che l'annuale evento fosse ospitato nelle loro citta' di residenza.

     Puntualmente anche nel 2005 si e tenuto l'annuale picnic dei pratolani residenti nell'America del nord presso il Liuna Gardens, un angolo di paradiso situato sulle rive del lago Ontario, nella periferia della citta' di Hamilton, Canada.

     Nella serata di Sabato 2 Luglio, a tutti i partecipanti arrivati da luoghi lontanissimi gli e' stata offerta una squisita cena dal Comitato presso un ristorante locale.

     Domenica 3 Luglio, verso le ore 10 del mattino, quando la comitiva di cui facevo parte entrava nel parco, la prima cosa che si notava era che i primi arrivati avevano gia' steso "i mantoil sopra i taveloine",

e una moltitudinede paesani erano attornati ad un lungo tavolo dove veniva servito caffe e vari dolci nostrani,

mentre nell'aria rintonavano le note di una marcetta del concerto bandistico dell'Italo-Canadian Band di Hamilton e di tanti in tanto si udivano improvvisati cori di canzoni nostrane.

     Il parco lentamente si affollava, gli ultimi arrivati cercavano di assicurarsi un tavolo sotto gli alberi per ripararsi dal sole, mentre sul volto di tutti si leggeva tanta gioia e tanta emozione nel riabbracciare amici e parenti.

 Alle ore 12:30 all'interno della Liuna Banquet Hall veniva servito uno squisito buffet a base di penne al sugo, pollo, salciccia, patatine e insalata.     Nel pomeriggio ad allietare la gia allegra atmosfera ci pensava il Coro Folcloristico Abbruzzese di Hamilton diretto dal pratolano Prof. Remo Presutti.

Si Arrivava cosi al momento della presentazione: Leandro di Cesare dopo aver presentato sul palco il Comitato Organizzativo, invitava per un intervento l'on. Tony Valeri, Ministro dei Trasporti del Canada, seguiva la reciprica consegna delle targhe ricordo e altri interventi da parte dei delegati delle varie Comunita'. Da menzionare l'intervento da parte di Donato Di Benedetto del Club Pratolano di Toronto, che per l'occasione ha voluto rivolgere a tuttii partecipanti l'invito di essere presenti all 71ma edizione dell'Intersate Picnic Pratolano che il prossimo anno si svolgera' in Toronto Canada.

     Interessanti sono stati anche gli interventi della signora Elida Petrella di Steubenville, Ohio, USA (paese natale del cantante Dean Martin),

e del signor Gino Ventresca proprietario della rinomata agenzia di viaggi di Toronto.       Mentre veniva servita la cena, questa volta all'aperto, sullo stage si esibiva il cantante Tony Ieluzzi con un lungo repetorio di canzoni italiane, seguiva l'estrazione della ricca lotteria, e infine la cantante Amanda Memmolo chiudeva la giornata.      A mio parere e' stata una giornata meravigliosa e ben organizzata che abbiamo passato in allegria, spensieratezza e contatto con la natura.       Nel frattempo la giornata volgeva al termine ancora una volta il solito rituale arrivederci:  "Uue' Peppi', se Dio vole c'e reverremme l'uanne prossime a Toronto"

     Al Comitato Organizzatore e tutta la communita' Pratolana di Hamilton va il nostro plauso e i piu' sinceri ringraziamenti.

ARRIVEDERCI A TORONTO

Over 950 people have participated at the 70th edition of the Pratolano Interstate Picnic in

Hamilton, Canada

     Seventy years have gone by since a small group of pratolani pioneers from Cleveland, Ohio, began an event that would reunite all those pratolani dispersed throughout the United States, once a year and if possible in a different city.

     In fact for many years what we now call the Pratolano Interstate Picnic, was held only in cities in the United States. During the 50's and 60's of the last century, with a vast number of pratolani emigrants arriving in Canada, particularly in cities such as: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London and Brantford in the province of Ontario, these newly arrived pratolani, they too wished for this annual event to be hosted in their residing city.

    With punctuality, even in 2005, this annual picnic for pratolani residents throughout North America, was held at Liuna Gradens, a corner of paradise located along the waters of lake Ontario on the outskirts of  the city of Hamilton, Canada.

 On the evening of Saturday, July 2nd, all the participants arriving from distant places, were hosted by the Organizing Committee for an exquisite dinner at a local restaurant.

     Sunday July 3rd, around 10 in the morning, as I entered the park with my group of friends, I first noticed that the first arriving groups, had  begun to claim their tables covering them with table cloths "i mantoil"

and a multitude of paesans, surrounded an assembly of tables where coffee and home made cookies were being served.

 In the air resounded the notes of a march performed by the Italo-Canadian Band of Hamilton and spontaneous folk songs.

     As the park became more crowded , the last to arrive tried to ensure themselves a table in the shade to seek shelter from the sun, scanning the crowd one cold notice the joy and emotion in embracing family and friends.

     At 12:30 pm, an exquisite buffet of penne with sauce, chicken, sausage, potatoes and salad was being served indoor in the Liuna Banquet Hall.

    Later in the afternoon, the Abruzzese Folk Choir of Hamilton under the direction of our fellow pratolano Prof. Remo Presutti kept the atmosphere in a joyful and festive mood.

    We had now arrived at the presentations: Leandro di Cesare after having introduced the Organizing Committee, invited to the microphone the Hon. Tony Valeri (Canadian Minister of Transport), following were reciprocal exchanges of plaques and other speakers. To mention the speech of Donato di Benedetto of the Pratolano Club of Toronto, who with the occasion wanted to extend to all the participants present, an invitation to attend the 71st edition of the Pratolano Interstate Picnic hosted the following year by the city of Toronto, Canada

     Of interest were also the speeches by Ms. Elida Petrella from Steubenville, Ohio, USA (native town of singer Dean Martin), and from Mr. Gino Ventresca, owner of the renowned travel agency in Toronto.

     As supper was being served, this time outdoors, entertaining on stage was the singer Tony Ieluzi with a long repertoire of Italian songs, following was the lottery and award of prizes and finally the singer Amanda Memmolo performed to close the night.

     In my opinion, it was a wonderful and well organized event that enabled us to spend the day carefree with joy and in touch with nature.

    In the meantime the day was coming once more to an end, as the a usual goodbyes cold be heard: "Uue Peppi, god willing we will see each other again next year in Toronto".

     Our congratulations and sincere thanks to the Organizing Committee and all the Pratolana community of Hamilton.
