Alcune
settimane or sono ho ricevuto una gradita telefonata
dagli Stati Uniti d’America, dell’amico Rismo
Gualtieri, che mi informava di una bellissima
iniziativa da parte del “Columbus Italian Club”,
un’associazione di Italo-americani di Columbus,
Ohio, a favore dei bambini terremotati del sisma del
6 aprile. Rismo ed i suoi amici si erano attivati
immediatamente per raccogliere un pò di fondi in
denaro da inviare ai piccoli sfortunati, e avrebbero
voluto che si facesse portavoce e messaggera di tale
iniziativa la nostra associazione, cioè la San
Vincenzo De Paoli, di cui mi onoro di far parte.
Infatti, dopo pochi giorni, puntuale, ci è pervenuto,
tramite assicurata postale, un assegno bancario di $
1133, frutto della raccolta. Tra
qualche piccola difficoltà burocratica e il G8 che
incombeva, alcuni giorni orsono, siamo riusciti a
prendere i dovuti contatti e a stabilire il giorno
della consegna, con Suor Lidia Pupatti, madre
superiore dell’orfanotrofio di San Gregorio (AQ),
quasi totalmente distrutto da quella tremenda scossa.
Con un mezzo messoci a disposizione dalla Croce
Verde di Pratola Peligna, giovedì 30 luglio ci siamo
recate a San Gregorio, dove ci hanno accolto
gentilmente le suore dell’Istituto, che attualmente
vivono nei container presso la tendopoli, mentre i
35 bambini miracolosamente scampati al terremoto,
sono ospitati attualmente in una struttura diocesana
di Silvi Marina (TE), in attesa della ricostruzione
del nuovo orfanotrofio.
Dopo aver effettuato la consegna dell’assegno e di
alcune immagini della Madonna della Libera siamo
stati accompagnati sui luoghi del crollo.
Vedere le rovine e le lenzuola ancora appese sui
balconi per calarsi giù, ci ha riempito il cuore di
tristezza, ma il sorriso e la gentilezza delle suore
hanno un pochino attutito l’impatto con la dura
realtà di quel luogo dove tutto parla ancora di
quella tragica notte.
Il racconto dettagliato di Suor Lidia, di quei
momenti terribili, diventa profonda commozione nel
ricordare chi non c’è più, chi in un supremo sforzo
per salvare la vita di quei piccoli angeli, ha
lasciato la propria sotto quei massi, come suor
Anna, la suora simbolo di San Gregorio e della fede
a cui si era consacrata.
Siamo ripartite consapevoli che quella piccola
goccia di acqua in quell’immenso deserto, possa
aprire il cuore al conforto e alla speranza, quella
speranza che anche nella notte buia e nera apre
sempre alla luce del giorno. Un ringraziamento
speciale va innanzitutto al presidente e ai soci del
“Columbus Italian Club” dell’Ohio, alla sig.ra
Luciana Lucci, presidente della San Vincenzo De
Paoli di Pratola Peligna e alla Croce Verde di
Pratola Peligna. Come
Gesù ci ha detto: “Non c’è amore più grande di chi
dona la propria vita per gli altri”.

A few weeks ago, I received a phone call
from from the United States of America by my
friend Rismo Gualtiery, who informed me of a
fabulous initiative taken by the Columbus
Italian Club (an association of
Italian-Americans of Columbus, Ohio) to
benefit children affected by the earthquake
of April 6th. Rismo and his friends had
begun the task of soliciting money donations
to be sent to these unfortunate children and
wanted to notify our association of San
Vincenzo de Paoli (of which I am proud to be
part of) of this undertaking. As promised
and punctual, after a couple of days we
received a money order of $1133.00 raised by
their initiative. Amid some bureaucratic red
tape and the ongoing G8
meeting, we were able to reach the proper
contacts to establish the date to make the
presentation, with Sister Lidia Pupatti,
Sister Superior of San Gregorio Orphanage in
Aquila, which had sustained major damages as
a result of the earthquake. With a
vehicle provided by the Pratola Green Cross,
we made our way to San Gregorio on Thursday,
July 30th. To welcome us were the nuns of
the orphanage, who now live in containers
near the tent city, while the 35 orphan
children - miraculously saved from
harm during the earthquake - are guests in a
diocesan building in Silvi Marina, TE, while
a new orphanage is built.
After we presented the funds as well
as some pictures of the Madonna Della Libera,
we were accompanied to visit the the damaged
site. To see the rubble and the bed sheets
hanging from the balconies that were used to
escape the rooms, filled our hearts with
much sadness, but the smiles and gentleness
from the nuns softened the harsh reality of
that took place during that horrible night.
As Sister Lidia recalls those
horrible moments, a deep sadness becomes
apparent in her as she remembers those who
are no longer with us, those who in an
effort to save the lives of those small
angels left their own underneath the rubble,
such as Sister Anna, who served as a symbol
of San Gregorio and the faith to which she
had consecrated herself to.
We left aware in the hope that the small
droplet of water we left in that immense
desert, might be able to open the heart
comfort and hope, in the hope that even
after the darkest night, the light of
day will follow.
Our special thanks first to the president
and members of the Columbus Italian Club of
Ohio, to Mrs. Luciana Lucci, president of
the association of San Vincenzo De Paoli of
Pratola Peligna and to the Green Cross of
Pratola Peligna. As Jesus stated: There is
no greater love than to give up one's life
for others.
